So you know you want to have some portraits made. But where would be a good location to take the photos. I work primarily in the Indianapolis area and travel through the Central Indiana region ( that basically includes the entire middle third of the state, Terre Haute to Richmond, and Lafayette to Bloomington, I am willing to travel further occasionally). Below is a list of locations in the Indianapolis area that I find to be great locations for and type of photos. Family portraits, senior photos, or engagement photos. This wonderful location has a number of fantastic stable buildings, and a number of very friendly horses that are more than happy to stick their heads out to be in your photos. There are also a number of fences, gates, and a horse pasture as well.
Located south of iIndianapolis, this large orchard is filled with beautiful trees loaded with apples, long scenic rows of trees and rolling hills make a great backdrop for your photoshoot.
Carmel, Indiana (116th street just west of Towne road)
This location is a small park with several unique areas:
Woodsy path, Open grassy field, Limestone blocks, Playground, Pond with wooden walkway, and Wildgrass path
This location is great for family portraits, this location can look like you are in the woods without having to drive an hour outside of indianapolis. The Wildgrass path give a great pasture look without having to hike through a field out in the wilderness. Great for photos of the kids, couples, families, and senior portraits.
Located on Shelby Avenue just south of Raymond street is a one of a kind gem with 2 distinct looks. A lush tropical conservatory ringed with a brick path, and a manicured sunken garden complete with fountains.
This location is great for individual portraits with beautiful foliage backgrounds laced with pops of color from orchids, birds of paradise, and other tropical flowers.
The Sunken Gardens are outdoors and a great formal setting with a romantic feel. Fountains and english style gardens are a great backdrop to engagement and couples photos.You can learn more about this location here
The grounds of the IMA are filled with beautiful grassy malls, the Lilly Mansion with it’s wroght iron railings, manicured english garders, a small japanese bridge and accompanying gardens, and several pieces of sculpture including the Three Graces, a Henri Moore, and Robert Indians’s iconic LOVE sculpture.

Located a short walk from the IMA is the 100 acres. Filled with colorful fun sculpture this location is fun, vibrant and playful. Great for fun energy filled images. http://www.imamuseum.org/visit/100acres
Beautiful flower filled gardens and a grassy mall. A large Weeping Willow graces this location along with a modern belltower at the top of the hill, an Iron bridge and an observatory make a great backdrop to nearly any type of portrait shoot.
Endless possibilities, fountains, the skyline as a backdrop, memorials, museums, the NCAA hall of Champions and the White River are all a short walk from one another. Too many options here to list.
lots of great storefronts on Washington Street, quaint brick alleys on Massachutsetts Ave, graffiti murals and train tracks, and underpasses. This is a great place to walk the streets and capture senior portraits, lots of variety and different vibes.
High or low-key portraiture in controlled studio lighting. Great for newborn photography, and more formal portraits and headshots, or if you just want to have photos taken and feel like a star. Located downtown in the Stutz building.
These parks are located about an hour outside of the city to the west. Deeps woods filled with limestone canyons and beautiful lush foliage make a great backdrop for any kind of portrait.
located at around 56th and Spring mill road this park has wooded walking paths, a large monument known as ” The Ruins”, Ionic column capitals, and limestone plinths are what you will find at this great park location on the north side of Indianapolis. Great for engagement, senior and family portraits.
You would be surprised at the great locations that you have right under your nose. Yes, you live with it everyday, but great photos can be taken right in the comfort of your home and they look beautiful.
Coxhall Gardens is located in Carmel Indiana at the corner of 116th street and Towne Road. The gardens consist of an amphitheatre, pond, a pair of matching belltowers, and a stately hall.
Old covered bridge and a small wooded park area. very distinct location for your photos.
Located on the near North side of indianapolis, this area is filled with lots of great locations. Quaint storefronts, the Monon Trail, Bridges, and city streets. This is a great location for casual portraits with an urban feel.
Located on the city’s east side, Fort Harrison is a former military base turned state park. There are lots of open green spaces, trails, and ponds that give photos a great outdoorsy feel without the hour long drive out to Shades or Turkey Run state park.
This large Indy Park located on the city’s west side is wooded, and is home to the Eagle Creek Reservoir, complete with beach and boats. The park also features walking trails, green areas and smaller ponds.
Grand to quaint. This location features several monuments to veterans and various wars. on the North end the Indianapolis Public library’s main location bookends the space and the south end is capped with a fountain created by Alexander Calder’s brother. Lots of limestone and grassy areas great for any kind of photos.
